Gelato Fun

Monmouth Health & Life July 2007 magazine issues - Local Flavor section

They’re delicious, they’re good for you and they hail from Red Bank. If you haven’t figured out that we’re talking about Blackwell’s Organic sorbettos and soy gelato, then it’s time to discover these sinfully delicious – yet healthy and environmentally friendly – frozen treats.

When Marcia Blackwell of Long Branch became a casualty of corporate downsizing in 2005, she turned to her husband Tom’s hobby and decided that self-employment was the answer.

“We started fooling around with recipes in the kitchen and came up with a pretty good homemade gelato we would bring to parties,” says the onetime office manager for a telecommunications firm. “Both of us felt right about going forward and starting up a business.”

The Blackwells believe in taking responsibility for the planet – that means buying 100 percent organic ingredients as well as Fair Trade – certified cocoa and coffee. “We have the first solar-heated home in Long Branch and an organic garden,” says Marcia. “We walk the walk.”

Blackwell’s Organic hit the shelves of Dean’s Natural Food Market in Shrewsbury in January 2006, each pint handmade and hand-¬packed with loving care. In-store tastings got buzz going, and soon Blackwell’s was expanding into other independent retailers in the area.

Blackwell’s Organic offers five flavors of gelato — all soy-based—and seven of sorbetto. At about $9 a pint, they cost more than your average ice cream, but you get what you pay for—a spoonful of chocolate gelato is a sinfully rich, dark-chocolate experience, and the sorbetto tastes as much like the fruit as a frozen dessert can.

Wendy Murphy of Fair Haven discovered Blackwell’s Organic last summer at the Red Bank Farmer’s Market. She now picks up her pints at Sickel’s Market in Little Silver. “I’ve tried about half the flavors,” she says. “It’s fresher-tasting, and I love the whole eco-friendly approach.”

Local Blackwell’s Organic distributors include Dearborn Farms in Holmdel, Whole Foods in Middletown, Delicious Orchards in Colts Neck, Market in the Middle in Asbury Park and Foodtown in Ocean Township and Freehold.
