Fruit, Water, Lemon, A Pinch of Salt

By Susan Sprague Yeske
An occasional series on locally made and grown products.
The current wave of interest in local and organic foods hadn't begun when Marcia and Tom Blackwell began making organic gelato and sorbet in 2005.
The Red Bank couple had been eating organically for several years before that, and lived in a house they had converted to all-solar power.
They developed their line of fro zen treats just because they wanted to make something good."I'm making these because there are products on the shelf I don't want to eat," said Marcia Blackwell, who stopped in to visit while on the road throughout the state as she markets the sweet confections sold under the name Blackwell's Organic.
Among the virtues of the frosty vegan treats are that they are cholesterol- and fat-free, contain no dairy, gluten or preservatives, are low in calories, sweetened with organic cane juice, maple syrup or agave, and are certified organic. Best of all, they taste great.
Gelato flavors -- made with soy -- are chocolate, coffee, peanut butter, peanut butter chocolate swirl and vanilla. Sorbets come in lemon, orange, mango, pineapple, raspberry and strawberry. The sorbet ingredients are "fruit, water, sugar, a splash of lemon and a pinch of salt," said Marcia Blackwell.
For the gelatos they use organic soy powder and fair-trade chocolate and coffee. The couple, with the help of Tom's father, make all of the treats themselves from recipes developed by Tom Blackwell. The gelatos and sorbets are sold by the pint at all three local McCaffrey's Supermarkets in West Windsor, Princeton and Lower Makefield, Pa.; Pennington Market in Pennington and Whole Foods in West Windsor. They also are sold by mail through their website (GelatoByMail.com). For those who believe that tasting is believing, there will be an in- store tasting event Saturday at Whole Foods from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (www.WholeFoodsMarket.com) Tasting events at McCaffrey's are scheduledfor May.
