June 2008 e-Newsletter

By Sallie Smith

June 9, 2008 - June 22, 2008

The Gourmet Club items of the week are Blackwell's Organic Raspberry Sorbetto , Coach Farm Triple Cream Goat Cheese, Mary's Gone Crackers Organic Original Flavor Crackers (Wheat and Gluten Free), Sarabeth's Raspberry Orange Marmalade, and Nueske's Applewood Black Pepper Smoked Bacon.

Back in April of this year, Bob Sickles went to the NASFT offices in NY to take part in selecting the finalists for the 36th Annual Sofi Awards Competition. He was invited to be a judge because NASFT named Sickles Market one of the five top specialty foods retailers in 2007. He and seven other heavy weights in the food industry tasted over 1,500 products in 31 categories to help select 140 Silver Finalists.

In May NASFT selected the finalists for Outstanding Product Line. On June 28th and 29th, the Gold Medal winners will be selected at the NASFT Summer Fancy Food Show in New York City. The two newsletters before the food show will feature finalists that Bob thinks highly of, and, after tasting them, so do I!

Some are old friends, like Blackwell's Organic Raspberry Sorbetto and Sarabeth's Raspberry Orange Marmalade while others are newcomers to Sickles Market, like Coach Farm Triple Cream Goat Cheese and Nueske's Applewood Black Pepper Smoked Bacon. All however are top of the line products that Sickles likes to offer our customers.

BLACKWELL'S ORGANIC RASPBERRY SORBETTO - This sorbetto is a finalist in the Outstanding USDA-Approved Organic Product at the fancy food show.

I have been eating it since Sickles started carrying it several years ago. Those of you who have tried it when Marcia has been in the market sampling it know that it is a winner!

It has intense raspberry flavor - almost as intense as Mr. Sickles' raspberries straight from the field but more refreshing on a really hot day!

Blackwell's Organic is located in Red Bank, NJ and is NJ's first and only certified organic, dairy-free gelato and fruit sorbetto maker.

Marcia Blackwell started it in 2005 after her telecom employer went out of business. The recipes the company uses are the result of years of recipe tinkering and testing by Tom, who is lactose intolerant and loves gelato.

The results of his and Marcia's efforts are absolutely delicious! While Tom is the recipe maestro, Marcia is the owner, founder, and moving force behind the company.

All the ingredients come from farmers and suppliers who are devoted to sustainable agriculture, resource conservation, and fair trade.

Blackwell's soy gelato and fruit sorbetto are made without preservatives, additives, or extracts and are cholesterol free and completely vegan. Each pint of sorbetto contains at least 70% real fruit and fruit juice. The only ingredients in their raspberry sorbetto are organic raspberries, filtered water, organic evaporated cane juice, organic lemon juice, and sea salt.

In April, 2008, Edible Jersey Magazine selected Blackwell's Organic to receive a Local Hero Award. Blackwell's Organic Raspberry Sorbetto is a real treat for everyone, made locally, and good for our planet. How can you go wrong with this wonderfully tasty dessert?
