Frequently Asked Questions About Organic & Fair Trade & Sustainability

What does Certified Organic Mean?
Per the National Organic Standards Board, "The primary goal of organic agriculture is to optimize the health and productivity of interdependent communities of soil life, plants, animals and people."

This translates in to fewer pesticides in the earth and in our bodies, and cleaner water for us to drink and for fish to swim in. It means that farm workers have a safer place to work without the threat of pesticide toxicity. It also means that ingredients taste better, and that we are supporting sustainable agriculture and the small family farm.

Why organic?
"I live here.
I breathe this air.
I drink this water.
I eat the food here.
I have no where else to go.
I am responsible for what happens to me.
It is up to me to protect my life and the world.
I'm not perfect but this is something I can do that does make a difference."
~ Tom Blackwell

What does Certified Fair Trade mean?
Ingredients that are Certified Fair Trade come from farms which pay their workers a fair wage and provide safe working conditions. Through our purchases families and communities are able to secure better education and healthcare for themselves and their children.

Because of the FTC regulations regarding pesticide use as a safety measure for farm workers, it means a healthier work force but also a sustainable farm. Fair Trade farms and farming cooperatives are encouraged to become certified organic. This helps to ensure a constant supply of quality ingredients.

Why Fair Trade?
"All anyone can hope for is that their hard work will feed and support their family. That's what fair trade means. It is not charity. It is fair pay for good products. It allows talented farmers and crafts people to support their family by their hard work." ~ Tom Blackwell

What does Sustainable mean?
To us, sustainable means for a farm, business or development to meet the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations to meet their own needs. "To improve the quality of human life whilst living within the carrying capacity of our ecosystems."

For example: A continuously maintained forest where mature trees are harvested and new trees are replanted to filter pollutants and provide habitat for wildlife. Management in this way will ensure continued resources and products for future generations.

Why Sustainable?
"It is our responsibility to speak for and protect those who can not do so for themselves. What I am talking about is our planet, its wildlife and waterways, as well as our children, grand children and great grand children who have yet to be born." ~ Marcia Blackwell

"In every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations." -- The Iroquois Confederacy
